A Car Enthusiast’s hobbies

I’m going to write a lot about a car enthusiast’s hobbies. This is merely a jumping point. Every car enthusiast has a hobby. It’s never just cars. Lots of things pair very well with cars… Watches, photography, 3D printing, vintage parts collecting, fashion, and even literature. Some of my favorite books are car related but the lessons to be learned have more to do with character and leadership than cars. My top 3 recommendations are Lee Iacocca biography by Lee Iacocca with William Novak. It details his career with Ford and the legendary resurrection of Chrysler. The second is American Icon by Bryce G. Hoffman about Alan Mulally’s role in bringing Ford into profitability during the 2009 financial crisis. My final pick is Unsafe At Any Speed by Ralph Nader. This is not a popular pick for car enthusiasts because the book is critical above all else of car design and the built in dangers of cars. However, I would argue that it does a better job of explaining automotive bureaucracy than anything besides an employee handbook. The diagrams, testimonies, and reports from General Motors throughout the 50s and 60s are extremely interesting to read through and even as an enthusiast I love to read the book. Sometimes the ugly side of the industry is just as fascinating as the good side. So, on a nice Sunday afternoon, pick up a good book and dive into it. Even if it isn’t car related. The lessons aren’t always about cars anyways.
